With roughly 40 million olive trees spread across the island, Crete generates approximately 30% of Greece&#8217;s entire olive oil supply, producing over 200,000 tonnes each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:60% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"647\" src=\"https:\/\/sises.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/olives-sises.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1494 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sises.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/olives-sises.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/sises.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/olives-sises-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sises.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/olives-sises-768x497.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"letter-spacing:5px\"><br>OLIVES<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Crete is seriously olive country \u2014 the island has been growing olives for thousands of years and is now home to around 40 million olive trees, making it one of the biggest olive-producing spots on the planet. <br>The olive tree isn&#8217;t just a crop here; it&#8217;s a huge part of Cretan culture and history, representing wisdom and peace, and was even considered sacred by the Minoans and ancient Greeks. Harvest season kicks off around late October and can stretch all the way through January, depending on how ripe the olives are and what the weather&#8217;s doing. It&#8217;s a pretty hands-on process that usually brings families and whole communities together. Once the olives are picked, they&#8217;re rushed to processing \u2014 ideally within 24 hours \u2014 to keep things fresh, using either old-school methods or modern centrifugal extraction to make extra virgin olive oil.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 60%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"letter-spacing:5px\"><br>CITRUS FRUITS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Oranges are a big deal in Crete, especially in the Sises area, which is known for producing some really top-notch ones. Thanks to the region&#8217;s unique microclimate and plenty of water flowing down from the mountains, the oranges \u2014 particularly Navel varieties \u2014 grow up super juicy and packed with nutrients. You can find them in season anywhere from November all the way through May, since different varieties ripen at different times. One variety is recognized for its aromatic intensity, amber hue, and powerful antimicrobial qualities that support both breathing and digestion. Another notable type comes from pine tree nectar, characterized by its deep flavor with hints of resin, darker appearance, and dense texture, while also being prized for its antioxidant properties. Additional varieties include a springtime honey from citrus blossoms, featuring a pale amber shade and subtle citrus fragrance, as well as a honey derived from diverse Cretan plants, creating an intricate taste combining floral and herbal notes. There&#8217;s also a unique autumn-harvested product from carob trees, sometimes called &#8220;Carob Syrup&#8221; or &#8220;Carob Molasses,&#8221; notable for its creamy consistency and intense aromatic character.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"letter-spacing:5px\"><br>HERBS &amp; SPICES<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Crete\u2019s got some seriously cool herbs \u2014 it\u2019s like nature\u2019s own pharmacy! The island\u2019s packed with unique plants (think Malotira and Dittany) that\u2019ve been used for centuries to heal and flavor food. Locals still hand-pick them from the mountains, dry \u2018em naturally, and pack \u2018em up with zero chemicals. These days, sheep and goat farming still rule the scene, using old-school methods that mix a bit of home life with roaming the hills.
